WELCOME IN THE LARGEST OYSTER MATURING MARSH IN EUROPE

Located at Marennes, just before the bridge over the Oléron Island, the Cité de l'Huître welcomes you to the very heart of the prestigious Marennes Oléron oyster region. More than 2 hours to discover the world of oyster farming and the oyster environment... Follow the guide!


Your visit includes:

  • A self-guided tour of the museum: A 12-minute screening and 4 colourful exhibition huts to understand and discover the oyster and the Seudre marsh, its oyster farmers and their history (Handout in English and German are available at the reception).
  • Outdoor games and booklets for children.
  • Daily open-air demonstrations on oyster farming, discovering the marsh, opening oysters and cooking hot oysters (in French only).
  • If you'd like to explore the marshes, you can rent bicycles (€3 extra).

OPENING HOURS

The site is open to individuals from the 30th of March to the 11th of November 2024. Ticket office closes 1h15 before closing.

To fully enjoy your visit, we suggest you arrive before 4:30 pm. The duration of the visit is around 1h30 hours.

Groups are welcome from the 1st of March to the 30th of November.

Our restaurant

La Cité de l’Huître’s restaurant "La Claire" is the perfect place to have a relaxing break and eat for lunch or take a snack at the end of the day.

The restaurant offers you simple and copious dishes with local products that can be appreciated by both adults and children. On sunny days, feel free to enjoy our terrace which has a panoramic view on the marsh and the museum.

Visit tips

  • Pets are not allowed on the site
  • The site is accessible to people in wheelchair.
  • The site offers a wide range of outdoor activities, bring your cap and sunglasses, or boots and umbrella depending on the weather.
  • If you are a group of 15 or more, contact us to book a private tour in English with a guide, at reservation@cite-huitre.com
  • Car park with 25 spots in front of the site. In July and August, the car park is located at the "Billetterie d'été" (120 spots). Take the free shuttle bus or hire bicycles to get to the museum (3km apart).
